The university (whose rooster mascot, Chanticleer, appears in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) offers bachelor's degrees in some 40 fields of study and another 35-plus undergraduate minors. It also offers master's degrees in business administration, education, and coastal marine and wetland studies. The school has an enrollment of more than 7,500 students. Coastal Carolina University was founded in 1954 as Coastal Carolina Junior College. Originally a branch of the College of Charleston, it was later affiliated with the University of South Carolina. Coastal Carolina became an independent institution in 1993.
